BC Dining Flawed

Our dining halls here at Boston College seem to generate a lot of strong opinions from the students. Now, I personally have no serious beef (no pun intended) with the food quality, but what I have heard from others may indicate that most are not huge fans of many of the delicacies presented, such as the famous customizable mac and cheese bowl.

Thus, as someone who will eat about anything placed in front of me, I would like to present some of the complaints that I’ve heard time and time again from other students about the dining halls in general. These complaints I would consider to be extremely valid. I’m not going to even touch on the quality of food complaints because an entire article series could be dedicated to people’s complaints on that issue. Instead, I will address the problems with prices, portions, and, I would say, the whole system in general.

Let’s start at the most basic level. The system in itself is completely flawed, and I can’t help but think that the system happens to be ripping each and every one of us off every time we go get food. I have visited several colleges and universities and they seem to have a simple uniform system: one swipes a card to mark their entrance, and then proceed to eat as much as they want all for one fixed price. For us here at BC, that system seems none other than amazing. And doesn’t it seem quite simple too? It probably seems so because it is so. I think we can all agree that changing the system to an all-you-can-eat one would be very agreeable.

The next problem is, of course, the price and the portions. My mother always fed me well and so maybe I’m used to some industrial sized portions, but I feel if one is paying nine dollars for a meal, one should at least leave less hungry than when they arrived. I would love to buy two portions, but at around fifteen dollars for that amount of food, I would probably be out of money within the first month and a half of the semester.

Lastly, I think we should address the biggest problem with the dining halls. Although it may be easy to make the exact same thing every day, every day of the year, I think it would be nice to maybe, I don’t know, change things up every month or so.  This is the biggest problem, because people tend to confuse the lack of variation of the food with poor quality. Chicken Parmesan is quite delicious, don’t get me wrong, but after a five night Chicken Parm binge, it stops tasting quite as good as it did.

These are just a few suggestions for the dining halls here. But as I noted earlier, change is not part of the dining hall’s program, so everyone should brace themselves for many more nights of Chicken Parm.
