Since its inception in 1983, The Observer has never been afraid to stand up for conservatism on campus. While large segments of the student body have been supportive of leftist causes over the past twenty- seven years, The Observer has always been there to challenge popular trends and to stand up for what we believe is right. Our stances and methods of expressing them have frequently drawn controversy, and the last issue was no exception.
Based on the barrage of comments on our website, three particular pieces have drawn the most attention. The first two were a cartoon and op-ed critiquing the Vagina Monologues. The third was an op-ed defending BC Dining’s menu choices.
Our intention in running these pieces was to offer a different outlook on recent campus issues, not to incite anger. However, sometimes publishing a piece that may be particularly direct is one of the roles of a newspaper.
We would specifically like to clarify, however, that the cartoon was meant as a satire of the play itself, not a personal attack on a student cast member. We found it amusing that, in a play that claims to promote women, one of the most cliché images used to objectify women—that of a scantily attired cheerleader—was used several times through the performance. We took issue with the character portrayed as such, not the actress.
Support for the cartoon was not unanimous among Observer staff. Specifically, Executive Editor Max Bindernagel, spoke out against the cartoon’s publication.
He wishes it be known that, although done in satire, he felt it was in bad taste.
While The Observer reserves the right to publish freely, we will actively work towards not unduly alienating ourselves from the BC community. As part of an effort to integrate ourselves with the larger community, the executive staff has already met with AHANA Leadership Council officials to discuss ways that we can work together, and looks forward to meeting with other student organizations that wish to meet as well.
We therefore welcome all critiques, even particularly harsh ones that we received as a result of the previous issue. Please continue to read and enjoy our paper. We certainly enjoy bringing it to you. If you ever have any comments, feel free to email us at bcobserver@gmail.com or visit our website at http://www.thebcobserver.com
