The Boston College club lacrosse team kicked off its season this year by placing 3rd in the Southern Shootout, a lacrosse tournament in Tallahassee, Florida. The team went 1-2 beating Georgia and lost two close matches to Michigan State and Florida State.
The club lacrosse team starts league competition against UNH on April 1st in Alumni Stadium.
BC club lacrosse is part of the Pioneer Collegiate Lacrosse League in the division consisting of BU, Northeastern, UNH, Uconn, and Rhode Island.
Led by middle Tom Luckey and their leading scorer Christian Falco at attack, BC is a heavy favorite, looking for their third straight league championship. The team’s strong defense is led by goalie Rob Ventura, a national player of the year candidate in 2009.
The squad is currently ranked 15th in the nation, which will earn them a bid to nationals, a 16-team tournament in Denver, Colorado, in May. Last year the team went into nationals as the 13 seed and suffered a disappointing first-round lost to Minnesota Duluth. They will be looking to improve upon last year’s performance and make it out of the round of 16.
Club sports at BC are incredibly competitive and they often travel to national tournaments all over the country. Unlike NCAA sports though, they must cover most of the expenses themselves. The club sport budget that all clubs receive only goes so far. Each member of the lacrosse team pays a fee of $1700 each season to cover all of the year’s expenses. This includes flights, hotels, and gear such as helmets, gloves, and various Under Armour apparel.
