Eagle’s Deli Sells Out

This past year, the television show Man vs. Food, featuring a daring food enthusiast traveling the nation taking on little known, local food and eating challenges, stopped in Chestnut Hill to visit Eagle’s Deli. His goal: to beat the Eagle’s Challenge: 5 pounds of hamburgers and 5 pounds of french-fries. Although the show’s star failed to finish the challenge, a national TV audience got acquainted with the small, BC clad deli that superfans have come to love. The old tables, the BC jerseys on the walls, the “wall of shame,” all made it look… well… like a small town deli.

BC students’ worst nightmare occurred last fall as Eagle’s Deli closed for renovations. Despite the typo-ridden signs advertising a cleaner, more spacious, and healthier Deli, we always knew deep down that this was the beginning of the end. When Eagle’s reopened this month, we were shocked to find that it is no longer a BC-related restaurant. Gone are the BC memorabilia and the college-priced two for one deals. Instead of students wearing their superfan t-shirts getting a bite to eat before a big game, we might now find men in business suits taking their lunch breaks. Our local dive had become a McDonalds. The worst part about the situation? Eagle’s no longer accepts students’ EagleBucks for payment.

We sincerely hope that in its effort to serve a larger populace and offer a cleaner eating environment Eagle’s Deli does not forget its name. More space and shiny new white tables might draw more customers, but Eagle’s has done so only by sacrificing what made it not only a restaurant, but an experience – an extension of our BC home.
