BC took care of business Tuesday night as they dropped the St. Francis Terriers 72-44 at Conte Forum. The Eagles were without Rakim Sanders, Corey Raji and Courtney Dunn but it didn’t matter for a second straight game. They will return for the Eagles next game which is this Friday in the Paradise Jam tournament in the Virgin Islands. The competition will begin to stiffen as they take on St. Joseph’s. Al Skinner will certainly welcome the help this weekend.
Tuesday night was pretty similar to Friday’s beat-down. St. Francis was not the most talented squad ever. Senior Tyler Roche turned in another good showing, accounting for 19 of the Eagles’ points. He was deadly with the trifecta, as he was 5-6 behind the three point line. He also played solid defense and contributed nicely on the boards. While he has often been a sore in the past it seems that his game has taken significant strides, albeit against inferior competition. While he may lack the athleticism to continue his stellar play against tighter competition, he should be able to keep giving consistent contributions, even if he won’t average 24.5 points a game.
Reggie Jackson was impressive for the second straight game. He dropped seventeen points in flashy fashion. Jackson shined on a night when fellow guard Biko Paris struggled (4 turnovers). Jackson definitely has superior athleticism and a higher ceiling than that of the junior co-caption Paris. While Jackson probably hasn’t swiped his job after only two games it’ll be an interesting battle to watch throughout the season. Both guards started tonight but that was due to the unusual lineup because of the suspensions. Jackson is dangerous in the open court, has nice touch on his jump shot and an uncanny ability to hit the hole hard.
It’s a bit early to anoint Jackson as the next Jason Kidd however as he does sometimes make bonehead plays. There were several occasions tonight in which Al, Bonzi, Pat and crew just shook their heads. One has to appreciate his aggressiveness though.
Joe Trapani and Josh Southern each dropped 13 points Tuesday. The Eagles would certainly be happy with 13 a game from Southern while it’d be nice if Trapani added a few to his average. One must consider the competition before getting overly excited about Southern’s play though. St. Francis lacked a dominant big man. The big fella from Saginaw will face bigger, more athletic forwards this weekend.
Dallas Elmore stepped up and surprised some people for the second straight game. He has seen some significant time thus far likely due to the suspensions. He played good defense, drawing two charges and donated eight points.
It was a good night overall for the Eagles and it’ll be interesting to see how Al works out playing time when Sanders, Raji and Dunn return. It’ll be especially interesting to see how he incorporates the guards’ playing time. Hopefully they can keep it rolling as they head to Paradise.
